Green Jobs Training

Community Environmental Center is committed to a green jobs training program for educationally and socially disadvantaged youth.

In conjunction with CEC affiliate Solar One, CEC provides an array of learning “tracks” that help young people acquire marketable skills for the new, green economy.

THE BUILDING PERFORMANCE track introduces students to the concept and practice of energy efficiency, including methods for assessing the energy use of new and existing buildings, and techniques for retrofitting buildings to increase energy efficiency.

THE PHOTOVOLTAIC INSTALLATION track teaches the science and mechanics of photovoltaic (PV) systems, provides students with hands-on installation experience, and exposes them to current information on grid-interconnection, net-metering, and rebates.

THE GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP track teaches general principles of business that can be applied to any sustainable business venture.

THE HORTICULTURE, LANDSCAPING AND PARK MAINTENANCE track teaches how to plant and maintain sustainable urban forests and grasslands, and how to conduct research and promote the many benefits of sustainable greenery.

THE DECONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS RECYCLING track teaches the skills required for closed-loop waste reduction demolition by extracting and saving building materials for reuse. (This track is in development).

CEC has also joined with the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) to spearhead a training effort and is helping to incubate a green youth corps.
